Drake serves as the global ambassador for the Toronto Raptors but his relationship with former team star DeMar DeRozan goes beyond the business on the court. Last week news broke that DeRozan was swapped for San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard and in response, Drake issued a statement on Instagram highlighting the commitment that the swingman gave the city. In a sit down with ESPN’s Chris Haynes, DeRozan called the trade and the apology “B.S.” but also revealed a trip to the 6ix God’s house helped him get through it.
“Day it came out, I went to Drake’s house. Me and him sat and talked for a couple of hours,” DeRozan shared. “Not even on some hoops stuff. Just to hear the words that come from him being the person that he is in this world, especially in Toronto. What I meant to this city. It was what I needed.”
DeRozan has also seen the various apologies issued by the organization and felt that the efforts were futile in the attempt to cover his loyalty to the team.
DeRozan tells ESPN: “I gave everything I had to that team. Every single day and night, whatever was asked from me to make us better. And it showed… So when (Ujiri) put that out there saying ‘gave them chances’ and ‘I have to do something’… it’s B.S. to me.”
